History and mission
BioLigands was founded in 2002 by Prof. Karsten Kristiansen, Dr. Lise Madsen, Dr. Hongbin Zhang, and by investment from Syddansk Innovation.
From the inception, a strong and uncompromising scientific focus was chosen as the principal basis of BioLigands. With constant focus on this mission, the experience provided by the founders was translated into development of specialized drug discovery tools and build-up of knowledge.
Thus, the more than 50 years of experience and know-how in molecular biology, metabolism, nutrition, and physiology initially provided by the founders has been complemented by recruited experts and key employees through the years. This has allowed BioLigands to design drug discovery tools from a sound and physiologically relevant basis, thereby ultimately facilitating development of better drugs. As a consequence, typical high through-put discovery strategies (potentially prone to experimental bias) have largely been disregarded and a company platform created that is instead focused on in-depth and knowledge-based identification and profiling.
Collaborators quickly realized the soundness of our approach and BioLigands gradually started to offer services broadly based on the existing in-house platform. To support own interests as well as our collaborators’ need for specialized and knowledge-based services, BioLigands’ assay platform has always been under development and expansion. Together, our team and the experimental platform provides the company a unique position within the field of metabolic R&D.
