BioLigands R&D program headlines
BioLigands' internal R&D efforts are centred on identification of biopharmaceuticals targeting mainly nuclear receptors and demonstrating strong potential in the treatment of obesity. As more than one billion adults are now overweight globally and obesity is also a major contributor to type II diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and cancer, the market is significant and with many niches.
We focus on natural compounds derived from selected Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas because natural compounds explore new chemical space and thereby increase the probability of finding novel drugs. Further, hundreds of years of indigenous TCM use imply that our starting material is already partly filtered for safe use, beneficial therapeutic action and enrichment of bioactive molecules compared to naive chemical libraries.
Our approach is to source TCM extracts and expert knowledge through our long standing Chinese network and identify promising leads using our in-house platform in combination with computational and chemistry methodologies. Leads identified are subjected to pharmaceutical R&D programs and the potential as a documented nutraceutical spin-off product secondarily evaluated.
BioLigands’ ambition is not only to define the next generation of drugs targeting obesity and related metabolic disorders, but to do this with drugs superior to presently approved drugs both in terms of safety and efficacy.
